There is a rich body of knowledge about skin that is passed from generation to generation. Not all of them hold true today. A fact changes its meaning when it is passed from one person to another, and myths are formed. Here are a few common myths about skin:
| Myth: |
Do not apply cream at night, as it prevents the skin from breathing |
| Fact: |
The skin repair itself at night and nourishment given then can only maximise benefits. You should however get the appropriate night cream prescribed by your skin doctor. |
|
| Myth: |
Sunscreens prevent tanning |
| Fact: |
No sunscreen can prevent tanning. It only decreases the harsh effects of sunlight sunburn and photo-aging. A physical block like dark cloth or an umbrella can protect you better than any sunscreen can. |
|
| Myth: |
You should not use moisturizer if your skin is normal/oily |
| Fact: |
Moisturiser does not add oil to the skin. It hydrates. It provides water into the cells of your skin, making it look smoother and softer. Oily skin needs frequent cleansing to remove excess oil and sebaceous secretion followed by an application of moisturiser. |
|
| Myth: |
Home / natural remedies are 100 per cent safe |
| Fact: |
If you have sensitive skin, even homemade packs and natural cleansers (turmeric, multani mitti, besan etc) can cause allergies or irritant reaction. Always perform a test patch of a home remedy before applying it all over your face. |
|
| Myth: |
Fairness cream transforms dark skin into fairer skin |
| Fact: |
Skin colour is largely genetic and fairness products can only make a very slight difference. With intensive skin improvement under doctor supervision, your skin can become more even-toned, less patchy, healthier and up to 30 to 35 per cent lighter. |
|
| Myth: |
Applying hair oil over night is good for the hair |
| Fact: |
Hair oil is not absorbed into the hair shaft or scalp. It merely smoothens hair cuticles. Applying hair oil overnight traps dirt and leads to blackheads and acnes on the forehead. |
